Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association, the groundbreaking community development corporation, is having a gala to honor former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer. October 30 in New York City. Ferrer and Banana Kelly were important players in the revitalization of the South Bronx during the 1990s.
Harold DeRienzo recently published a book that chronicles the story, The Concept of Community: Lessons from the South Bronx. He also wrote an article about community development in the fall 2007 issue of the National Civic Review.
The South Bronx won an All-America City Award in 1997, which you can read about in this NY Times article.
